At Christopher Newport, you never need to go far

When I was first looking at colleges, I felt like I needed to live in a big city. I wanted to be in a place where I could find anything I wanted at a moment’s notice, just a subway ride away or a couple of blocks to walk. Though, as I kept touring colleges I was pleasantly surprised by the amenities offered by and around Christopher Newport. Newport News is a relatively large town, but pretty much anything a Captain could need is within walking distance of campus.
Christopher Newport requires its students to live on-campus for the first three years which is great news if you don’t own a car. What’s even better news is there are two grocery stores right outside of campus, Harris Teeter and Food Lion. Further, there is no shortage of restaurants in the surrounding area including several pizza places, Chipotle, Tropical Smoothie, Subway, and Panera Bread. There are also several sit-down restaurants in the immediate vicinity, with my favorite being Aago (an Indian and Nepalese restaurant) which is right across the street from main campus and directly in front of East campus. (Plus, of course, there are two dining halls on campus and a handful of campus eateries.) This is my fourth year at Christopher Newport and, honestly, I’ve never felt like there was any shortage of food options for me that were within walking distance.
There is also a gas station across the street as well as a post office and two barber shops. It’s difficult to think of anything that’s missing, but Christopher Newport is truly situated in a place where everything is at your fingertips. If you do have a car, then you have all of Newport News to explore where you’ll find countless thrift stores, restaurants, specialty shops, and amenities. A short drive from campus can bring you to City Center or the Patrick Henry Mall, both of which are packed with delightful shops and restaurants for you to spend your day at. Newport News also has various museums to visit as well as a steady stream of festivals each year. And did I mention the beach is nearby as well?
Being that Christopher Newport University is a small community, one might assume that your recreational opportunities are limited here, but that couldn’t be any further from the truth. There are ample destinations to fulfill your curiosities or any itch for exploration all around campus and spread across the city of Newport News. After four years, I am still finding new places to visit and love as I explore with my friends. Though, it’s nice to always know that the classics are right outside my doorstep on campus.
