Schooners Grill Review

You can’t go just once

Anyone who’s been at Christopher Newport longer than a few months has almost definitely heard of Schooners. It’s one of the most popular bars/restaurants for Captains to visit because it’s located right down the street from campus. On any typical weekend morning, you’ll most assuredly find at least one group of Captains at Schooners enjoying the brunch menu… and on any typical weekend night, you’ll probably find at least one group of Captains enjoying the drink menu. Though, to truly experience Schooners at its best, I recommend enjoying both menus on your visit. Schooners has some great in-house specialties that are definitely worth trying out.

I went to Schooners with my friends for Saturday brunch, but we were about thirty minutes late for the menu so we had to settle for a regular lunch. In typical Christopher Newport fashion, there were plenty of Captains already inside which put a smile on my face as soon as I walked through the door. (I had a mask on so you wouldn’t have been able to see it though.) Despite the disappointment of missing brunch, thankfully, the lunch menu did not disappoint. I ordered a portobello sandwich with fries that was absolutely delicious. But honestly, just about anything tastes good when the restaurant is also serving unlimited $3 mimosas. Needless to say, the economic mimosas are a big draw for college students on a budget (which is every college student) and probably one of the main reasons Schooners is so popular. My friends and I had such a good time that we went back the next morning (this time making it to brunch).

After a long weekend, unwinding with friends over brunch is the perfect way to coast into a new school week and Schooners is the perfect place for that. Their menu is very customizable, so you have lots of options for toppings/fillings. I went with a breakfast quesadilla with egg, spinach, mushrooms, and green peppers. Oddly enough, they did not include cheese which left me to speculate if I was meant to specify I wanted cheese or if the chef had simply forgotten. Either way, cheese plays a pretty integral role in quesadillas so it was a bold move seeing it forgone, but I’ve been trying to lessen my dairy intake anyway so I guess I’ll call it a happy accident. With that said, my breakfast quesadillas were more like flat, breakfast tacos, but still tasted great so I won’t complain.

Right next to Schooners is a tattoo parlor which is a bold placement as I’m sure many a tattoo were impulsively inked after a few drinks from the bar. Nevertheless, whether you’re interested in watching a game with friends, having a filling meal, or maybe just seeking out some liquid confidence to inspire your first tattoo, Schooners is a great place to visit. They also deliver if you’d rather dine at home. While the brunch menu may end at 1 p.m., the mimosas are all day so there’s never a bad time to dine.

Schooners is located at 12567 Warwick Blvd, Newport News, VA 23606. For more information, visit their website at
