Saturday’s event, entitled “Stranded” featured nine arrangements sung by CNU female acapella group, the ‘Newport Pearls’
Students, parents and community members filed into the Pope Chapel Saturday morning for the Newport Pearls “Stranded” concert, featuring fourteen female acapella voices from CNU.
Themed for a daycation, beachy vibe, floral decorations greeted audience-members as they filed in to seat nearly half of the Pope Chapel. At 11 a.m., the Pearls took the stage dressed in matching blue t-shirts in front of vine and string-light wrapped microphones.
The group sang nine songs, alternating lead singers and introducing themselves before each arrangement. Fitting with their theme, most of the girls discussed “who they would want to be stranded with on an island” among their fellow Pearls.
Most of their songs were upbeat, pop tunes, including “High Hopes,” “I’ll Be There for You” and “Most Girls.” The group also sang their arrangement of “This is Me” from “The Greatest Showman” (2018) and “I Believe You,” a song inspired by the #MeToo movement.
In true acapella fashion, the group created all of their own sounds, also inspiring the audience to clap along during certain songs.
As the last concert for graduating Pearls, seniors Justine Elliot, Maddie Ettrich and Brionna Simmons were presented with gifts at the end, after singing their ‘senior song’ entitled, “I Won’t Let Go.”
